The Best of its Kind September 25, 2005 Dr. Mark G. Blumenthal 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
As a public health medical officer, I refer to this text daily. It is completely indispensible, and has been for many years. This new edition by David Heymann even incorporates Emerging Infectious Diseases such as SARS and the implications of EIDS for Homeland Security. Buy it!
Great handbook of diseases August 2, 2006 E. Siu (Brisbane, Australia) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book is extremely handy for everyday use and study of communicable diseases. It helps whether you are a student or a practitioner needing to brush up on the details of a disease.
It has a clear, well organised format that provides necessary information on identifying a specific disease, transmission, control and treatment. Many of the entries are written by collaborators who are experts in the respective diseases.
The compact size of the text makes it all the more useful, but the binding on the paperback edition is quite poor.
The bible of communicable diseases January 3, 2007 Robert Lipsitz (Washington D.C.) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is one of the handiest medical references you could ever own.
All communicable diseases are listed in alphabetical order. Each disease is discribed in the same format...
Identification
Infectious Agent
Occurrence
Reservoir
Mode of transmission
Incubation period
Period of Communicability
Susceptibility
Methods of control
Also listed are pseudonyms.
The 18 edition while written in 2004 includes a 18 April 2006 update on Influenza.
For anyone involved in the medical profession, this book will provide the most concise and pertinent review of communicable disease.
I dare say that this text combined with Sanford, will be the only I.D. resources 99% of medical professionals will ever need.
Control of Communicable Diseases Manual March 8, 2007 David A. Turpin (Chicago, IL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is excellent reference material that should be on the shelves of anybody in the Public Health field. Actually, anybody who wants a quick description of any communicable disease should consult this book. I purchased my first edition in 1974, which was the eleventh edition published in 1970, and several communicable diseases have been discovered since then, therefore, you will find that you will want or need to purchase every edition of this book. It is published every five years.
Easy to use without a PHD November 2, 2007 Stephanie Kennedy (Green Bay, WI USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I use this book to do Medical Missionary work throughout Central America, especially Haiti, where I usually find something I've never seen before and certainly have never treated. It is very user friendly and knowledgeable.
